Project description

hooami is the next generation of social networking website. While other social networking sites aim to connect you with people know, hooami wonders how well you know yourself.

hooami stemmed from my earlier degree work investigating online identity and altering the user's perception of a website. The concept can loosely be described as a parody social networking site, although this isn't entirely true. While hooami does imitate the visual design and functionality of social networking sites (circa 2007), the concept runs much deeper than a parody, aiming to create feelings of confusion, or annoyance in the user as their information - their virtual identity - is manipulated.

hooami has been shown at the University of Chichester Fine Art Degree Show 2008.

My research into social networking sites, identity theory, artist research and concept development can be explored in my blog (a requirement of the course was to keep a regular journal of sketches, ideas, research etc):

User comments:

  • "I've actually been sitting here for ages seeing what other people have written"
  • "I didn't like the questions. They were too personal and strange."
  • "I kind of liked becoming another person"
  • "I didn't like other people being able to see the things I wrote, even though it was anonymous."
  • "I signed up and got a profile page, but the answers were wrong. Then I realised that the other answers came from other people. It felt weird knowing that other people would see my information like this (Question: Did you read the terms and conditions?). I didn't read the terms, I'm so used to just accepting them!"
